Time is running out to tell the Trump administration what you think about its proposal to drastically scale up logging in Oregon's old-growth forests. The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced a plan last month that would quadruple the amount of allowed logging in western Oregon's forests, in hopes of increasing timber yield harvest to about 1 billion board feet annually. Last year, the BLM yielded around 250 million board feet in the same area, so this would be a dramatic increase-akin to what was being harvested prior to restrictions that were put in place in the 1990s (remember the Northern Spotted Owl!??). Some in the timber industry celebrated the proposal, as did leaders in parts of Oregon that historically relied on logging money and have suffered economically since the restrictions went into place.
