It is beginning to look like the 'centrist' Democrats and Schumer are getting wobbly on DHS funding.

"Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) and Angus King (Maine)...attended the meeting, as did Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chair Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who did not support last year’s deal to reopen the government."

We have seen this movie before. It's exactly the ploy used back in December to end the shutdown without getting anything.

Just so everyone remembers clearly Schumer PROMISED no DHS funding unless three conditions on reigning in ICE were met:

@mastodonmigration the only reason Schumer hasn't folded already is Trump decided that actually HE was shutting down the government until they eliminate the midterms.
@mastodonmigration Time to harass "Uncle Angus"! smh

@mastodonmigration Schumer didn’t attend this meeting, so why are you calling him out?

It also sounds like there wasn’t much progress.

I eventually expect a deal that I wont be happy with, but I suspect there will be unintended consequences to not funding DHS that will create pressure specifically on Democrats. I don’t blame Democrats which have very little power, I blame the voters.

@Extra_Special_Carbon

He didn't attend the meeting last year either, but is widely recognized as condoning the deal in private. He is the leader, so keeping the troops in line is his responsibility, and he is the one that made the promise vis a vis ICE restrictions. He has also started making some wishy washy comments. Would love to be wrong, and it turns out he holds the line.

@mastodonmigration He won’t hold the line to anyone’s satisfaction. Democrats are too far dissadvantaged. At some point, the lack of DHS funding will hit something crucial, and then it will be over.

Or the Republicans will just kill the filibuster and pass the SAVE act giving them a permanent majority in all three branches of government. I’m surprised they haven’t.

We lost everything in 2025.
