"For the player, nothing."

... is my long-standing "bumpersticker slogan" for what #HTTRPG is all about, encapsulating (but not explaining) why passionate roleplayers love the form.

It also echoes the yearning I feel.

I haven't had a GM who could deliver on that promise for a while, now. The last one (brilliant, lovable guy who _gets_ roleplayers) is focusing on his career/staying afloat and hasn't had time/energy. 😥

I've still been gaming, and it's been ... fine. Just, LOTS for the player.

@SJohnRoss When you say this, is the implicit converse “For the character you're playing, everything”?

This is how I've been reading it but I don't actually know.

@zarfeblong Exactly so. It's very much by player request to vanish into character for a bit, be one of this cool group of PCs, and have the entire design geared for that.
@zarfeblong Importantly, banter alone doesn't satisfy ... which places the design burden mainly on scenario design, and to a lesser extent on setting.

@zarfeblong So a more precise formulation might be "For the player, this one important thing, por favor."

But that doesn't fulfill the bumpersticker's mission, such as it is. 😄
