On the Comic Relief show, they've had Stephen Mulhern do The Bank Job, and be almost as funny as George Lamb.

The Masked Finger marks a return from NDR/ARD's Eurovision entry.

Amanda Greatest Asset To The Traitors on the Amandaland sketch, not Amanda Actual Traitor.

Now, what can #TOTP offer? TUNE!!!!!

"Bring it all back" - S Club 7. It's the key change of joy that makes the song 15% better.

#TOTP

Anyway! Our first Mystery Year comes from the week when Angela Rippon and Anna Ford were fired from TV-am for speaking of "treachery behind the scenes". Gaye Brief won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Aberdeen reached the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup.

Last week, we saw a 102-year-old woman in the Elvis Costello video. Turns out she's not the oldest person ever to appear on the show.

With Lord Gary Davies, it's Tony Blackburn.

If you can, please stand for the #TOTP national anthem.

"Na na hey hey kiss him goodbye" - Bananarama

Glitterfall, pompoms, balloons, flags that massive disco light in the ceiling. We're not in 1999 any more.

Keren, Sara, and Siobhan starred in an entertaining music video, where they train in a boxing gym and end up duffing a motorcycle gang.

Girl power, at this early date, was not even a slogan.

#TOTP #Bananarama

"Speak like a child" - The Style Council

After blowing up The Jam last year, Paul Weller could have put out a recording of him farting into a microphone and it would have made the top ten. Mercifully, he made a perfectly decent jazz-funk song, rather close to The Jam's final waxings.

The video's filmed in the Malvern Hills, and the band duck down to avoid being splattered by snow.

#TOTP #PaulWeller #TheStyleCouncil

"Garden party" - Mezzoforte

More upbeat jazz-funk, this time from Iceland's most famous export before Björk.

Used as backing music on the top 40 show by young Trevor Brookes, but he's still living in his matchbox in Stoke-on-Trent.

Lord Gary Davies' shredded t-shirt dates this episode to within a few months, IIRC the usually unfashionable Adrian Mole said he wore something similar when writing his diaries.

#TOTP #Mezzoforte

Snipped from this episode: Jonathan King's wander through hits from Europe, including an early chance to appreciate the band Nena performing "99 Luftballoons".

"Visions in blue" - Ultravox

Midge is lit blue while Flick of the Wrist frolic around. Except this is a video, so it's some imitation group, Arlene's Over or whatever.

Very artsy, looks like something's happening, wonder when they'll add the song.

#TOTP #Ultravox

"Run for your life" - Bucks Fizz

They're all in the same place? They've all caught the cab to verdant Shepherd's Bush? Bore-ring!

The only reason anyone remembers this song is because half of the Fizz made it to Jersey for Keith Chegwin's Saturday Superstore Delivery Van. The other half got caught in London, and they had to do some clever trickery to make the performance happen.

"Drop the pilot" - Joan Armatrading

By popular request!

A simple and deadly performance, a simple and deadly song.

Would Joan look more familiar with the guitar from "Love and affection"? Perhaps. Would it be better? Naah. This is [chef's kiss].

Just beats Bananarama for my Performance of the Night.

#TOTP #JoanArmatrading

"Total eclipse of the heart" - Bonnie Tyler

How many stage smoke machines can one woman need? There's at least two accompanying this epic bombast, plus a wind machine that keeps plastering Bonnie's hair to the side of her face.

Absolute epic song, given its due here.

And in better quality than the 7-inch single given away with Rice Krispies a year or two later, which sounded like someone had gone snap crackle and pop all over it.

#TOTP #BonnieTyler

"Rock the boat" by Forrest is the playout clip.

They're back on wednesday, because next thursday was the day of "A Song Against Europe", the BBC's selection for the Senior Eurovision Song Contest. Winner: "I'm never giving up" by Sweet Dreams.

Our first Mystery Year was 1983. More in a moment!

A Song for Europe 1983

YouTube

Our second Mystery Year comes from the week Ian Hislop started editing Private Eye, and the Birmingham Super Prix was approved for the summer. Dawn Run won the Gold Cup, and Dukla Prague made the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup, beating Benfica on away kits.

Hosts are the Queen of England Janice Long, and Sir Simon Bates.

If you can, please stand for the #TOTP national anthem.

"Hi ho silver" - Jim Diamond

Jim brings a very large backing band, cramming eight people onto the main stage. Darts from the last decade sit down, safe in the knowledge that their record is still safe.

Leather coat is not a great look for Jim, all the weight seems to be around his shoulder.

Theme from "Boon", taken from the album "Desire for Freedom", and Jim's final trip to the top ten.

#TOTP #JimDiamond

Bates, shush!

"The Haarlem shuffle" - The Rolling Stones

A mixture of Mick and the OAPs performing, and attractive young cartoon cats doing whatever animated cats do.

At this early date, computers didn't allow the group to interact with the animations; it's only a few weeks until Queen will have a video interacting with CGI, and a few years until Paula Abdul will smooch with MC Skat Kat.

#TOTP #TheRollingStones

Something more interesting than the The Rolling Stones next.

From the vicarage, Simon Mayo drops in to promote himself, and his Saturday evening show starting in early may. He also gets to introduce the next record.

It's another famous #TOTP ten-second interview, except here we get the distinct impression that young Mayo's sold himself well. Hope to see more of him.

"Love comes quickly" - Pet Shop Boys

Damn fine music. An atmospheric song that's struggled into the top 20.

Lots of close-ups of Chris on the keyboards, drawing some attention away from Neil looking mean and moody upfront.

It's a curious choice of single, sounding very similar to "West end girls" while being nowhere near as quick to catch the ear.

#TOTP #PetShopBoys

#TOTP Breakers!

Stevie Wonder with "Overjoyed", airports and taxis and all that travel business...

Siouxsie and the Banshees with "Candy man", we agree with Janice that it's a good record, but that doesn't make it any easier to understand.

"Living doll" - Cliff Richard and The Young Ones

Ooh, different opening rap from Rik, the one where he mentions Keith Chegwin. That's the second time he's cropped up in tonight's thread.

Silly, funny, entertaining, and great. Comic Relief singles may have peaked already.

#TOTP #CliffRichard #ComicRelief

"You to me are everything" - The Real Thing

(takes out a mallet and reminds Sir Simon Bates of the rules of The Mystery Years.)

Top of the Pops re-runs will eat themselves!

It's a timeless classic, the remix isn't too obvious, and the group - one lead singer, the others in a line just behind - still has fun. They've changed in ten years, that's almost inevitable, but not in a bad way.

#TOTP #TheRealThing

"Chain reaction" - Diana Ross

One last good night with the boys, eh?

"Kyrie" - Mr Mister

Not quite as mysterious as "Broken wings", but no slouch either.

Our second Mystery Year was 1986. Is that two weeks in a row where the Mystery Years have been pretty darned good?

#TOTP #DianaRoss

Neil Sedaka night next on BBC4.

BBC2 tomorrow has the best performances from Comic Relief shows, then #TOTP hits from 87 and 88.

Comic Relief continues on BBC1, and here's the highlights of the 1986 show (can't get tickets for love nor money? just need patience.)

Whatever you're doing this week, have a great one. And trust me on the sunscreen.
