I've been thinking a lot lately about what's important in life. Like for example... One of the nicest things I experience is the ability to cook dinner for my spouse and housemates. Also enjoyable is riding my bike. And of course, spending time with interesting and cool people.

I have lost so much interest in tech and being part of tech. I really enjoy programming, as I always will... but I definitely feel I'm going to try to find a way to make it my hobby, rather than my job.

I'm just so fed up with tech and most tech people. At least financial people know they're sucking the lifeblood out of others to live. Many tech people do that and think they're "saving the world" while doing it. They genuinely think you should thank them for their crimes against humanity.
I feel like being part of this culture nowadays is just... not good. Which of the 3 media companies would you like your culture sold to you from? Amazon, Netflix, or Disney? What's that? You don't want their media. Sorry, but no one else can afford this space. You're always welcome to watch independent content on Youtube or TikTok...

I've been slowly exiting it more and more. I own and maintain my own media. I don't drive a gasoline car and have started biking more. I run Linux instead of Windows. My primary social network that I actually *post* on is here on Mastodon, on a site completely owned by myself and the community I share it with.

I feel like I've been quite successful. I hardly ever buy things these days, and I almost never see advertisements. It's rare I find out some movie, show, or product is coming out now.

I want community culture now. People sharing what they love with one another without the government or some algorithm tracing it all. I want my friends to recommend new artists whose albums I should buy and share. Recommend old TV shows to download and watch. Stuff like that.
As corporations try to suck money out of every last bit of humanity we have left, the most powerful act of resistance we have is to simply be more human without them. Abandon Amazon and commercialism. Abandon FOMO. Embrace boredom and uselessness. Stop chasing the dopamine...
@pandora_parrot Great thread, thank you. I feel the same in many ways, though I have a different job and only dabble in programming for fun.
@pandora_parrot I appreciate the "be human without them" idea. Denying them the ability to bend my experience to their benefit. I feel this way about politics too, like sure I'll still vote in my interests, but there are 100 more radical actions I can take together with those I love that will make a difference. Whether that be feeding people, writing arguments with clarity and passion, or just dancing like a maniac.

@pandora_parrot I'll contribute! All I ask is for contributions in return...

Northern Exposure was a series unique to television. It aired from 1990 through 1995, on CBS, and can be found in its entirety on both Amazon, Netflix, and with commercials on Tubi.

For an artist, I am a particular fan of The Shins, and their most recent album, Heartworms, has my favorite song "Mildenhall"

For an independent movie, I recommend Messy. It's available on Kanopy, a free streaming service available through your local public library.

@pandora_parrot

In order to stay away from the major platforms, I offer both Kanopy and Hoopla for both television and movies.

I offer Tidal for an alternative to Spotify.

There is also Tubi, a free service that offers multiple television programs, with commercials.
