It’s too soon to expect any major effect on hemoglobin production, but I had blood work done yesterday (the day after I got a massive iron transfusion) and my Ferritin count has gone from “check again and see if he’s breathing” levels of iron deficient anemia to “lower levels of the normal range for folks who bleed more often than is recommended”, which translates numerically (much less fun as a metric IMO) to a ninefold increase (precisely), which I’ll take - happily.

I’m given to understand it can take a week or so to really be reflected in bloodwork (platelet count & hemoglobin/hemocrit), and between 10-14 days to feel any effects on energy level, but just seeing that number jump like that instead of the steady decline we’ve been seeing is pretty encouraging.

The questions now are :

1) What effect will it have in my system in general? (Energy levels, ongoing blood-loss issues, digestive health, brain-stuff, etc..) (1/2)

2) How long will a single transfusion last in terms of beneficial effect? (Will this need to be monthly, quarterly, annual…?)

I also have a personal hope that we’ll be able to stop with the weekly bloodwork after June, as I’d like to be able to not look like a fucking Renfield at the beach, y’know? (2/2)
