Mostly it's other people's believe it should be important to the one having a birthday. Although I am happy if someone remembers, I don't need the birthday greetings. They are just an occasion for people to contact you and tell something nice and that's what we basically seek for.

I don't tell people about my birthday because I don't need forced sympathy. I am more happy to receive it the rest of the year without a special reminder.
