Ironically Second Life is still online 23 years later.
It wasn't the idea of avatars that made that fail, though many will say it was. It was the "real life prices for your avatar's shit" that was the problem. H*ll if you'd been able to login with any VR set rather than requiring FB's latest offering I bet more would have at least given it a try. You can pick those things up for ~$20, they're just not very good VR sets.
