You may not realize this, but being a journalist provides him with protections. As a journalist he should not be a target, same as a medic. No matter whose side he is on, he is not a target. By attempting to strip him of this title, you would also be stripping him of his legal protection not to be targeted.
Most people agree that journalists (even enemy journalists) should not be targeted by weapons, for what should be fairly obvious moral reasons.
