the Big Short (a long and very boring film about PCB assembly rework due to an incorrectly connected power pin)
you think this is funny. but i have a board with The Big Short on it and i don't know where it is :(
@whitequark Big Short sounds like an average YouTube upload
@eloy @whitequark consider: Long Long Short, a concept film about Nagai Sakeru Gummy in 60 seconds
@whitequark Current limited PSU and a thermal camera, maybe? Only time I fucked up a board that badly was on one that had an obvious candidate in the form of the voltage regulator. (I forgot that the middle pin is usually attached to the fin when changing the pinout from the original BOM's Unusually Specific regulator to one that JLC wouldn't charge extra to install)
@becomethewaifu @whitequark Another old trick is to run 1 A into the circuit, and using a high-resolution lab DMM as a microohm meter. Not sure how well it works for today's plane-powered and high-density boards.
@becomethewaifu @whitequark or current unlimited PSU and the short is briefly highlighted before the problem solves itself 🙂
@whitequark it's 2026, surely someone has figured out how to do 3D TDR with uhh... a fancy smartphone
@whitequark They call it the Circuit Breaker in the stock market for a reason.
@whitequark *wins Best Sound Design Oscar for 118 minutes of trace beeps*
@whitequark I'm pretty sure I'd watch that.
@whitequark Yeah ok I'd watch that.
@whitequark Margin Call is the superior movie on these historical events anyways. A thrilling movie starring Zackary Quinto, who has to call people about insufficient margins between PCB tracings. The resulting short nearly bankrupts the company and leads to the circuit designers all being fired.
