So um. For those who don’t know. We haven’t been able to hire enough truck drivers for years.

The US is absolutely dependent on truckers for distribution of food, fuel, and everything else.

“Shortages” doesn’t even begin to describe what’s coming.

@masukomi wow that's actually nuts

according to the BLS there were 892k heavy truck drivers in the US in 2024:
https://www.bls.gov/iag/tgs/iag484.htm

so 200k would be 22% of the workforce. maybe not all of the 200k are actively working as truck drivers but it still seems like a huge problem

@masukomi haven’t had time to look into this to see how it’s different from what’s already been happening but this has been happening to my clients for months. It’s horrible. We’re a big agricultural area and we NEED CDL drivers.

@Recalcitrant Yeah. I wasn't aware there were so many immigrant drivers, but if there really were/are 20,000 of them then they were the thing keeping our heads above the water.

Not many people are into the idea of 5+ days a week away from friends and family and showering in truck stops regardless of how much you offer them.

It's like the UK suddenly having a nurse shortage after Brexit because they were mostly immigrants. Just 🤦‍♀️

@Recalcitrant 🤔 actually, Brexit had literally the same issue with truckers didn't they?
@masukomi
Huh. Somehow I never expected a self-inflicted version of the old Day the Earth Stood Still.
