"Yo guys look at Linux it's all about freedom and privacy"
"But we're also putting your date of birth in the system because foreign governments really wanted us to 👉👈🥺"

@[email protected] my final disillusionment in systemd, 2026 colorized
@witix This is what has pushed me to be actively against it
Fuck all that
@[email protected] probably gonna be switching to a systemd-less distro this weekend, most likely just gonna pick devuan but I'm open to suggestions I guess -w-

Edit: oh right, alpine linux exists

@witix @usernameswift

There's also @VoidLinux

However, be advised that due to their packaging philosophy of "just ship reasonably up to date versions of upstream" as a corollary implies, that if some projects (say Vim, for example) decides to slop, then the packages shipped in the default repos will be sloppy, too.

Maybe it's time to introduce a nonslop repository, or better yet, put all sloppy projects into a sloppy repository.

@datenwolf @VoidLinux @[email protected] to be fair I always found their package manager a bit unintuitive but that's just me

@datenwolf genuine question: what is a distro supposed to do other than just.. providing up to date upstream versions? no distro will be maintaining forks because of ai use, or removing popular packages

@witix @usernameswift @VoidLinux

@witix

I switched from Centos 6.10 to PCLinuxOS nearly two years ago. It is systemd free and does everything I need including running steam.

It is a rolling distro that uses the debian package manager with rpm packages. It can be a little behind in software releases but so far it has been rock solid.

@usernameswift @witix I thought Linux was all about enterprise software and powering surveillance capitalism’s server farms.

Ah, no, my bad, that’s just how they make all their money is all.

@[email protected] @witix @aral makes sense why God will pull the plug on the tech according to many holy books. late stage capitalism on all tech including open source tech is really evil.
@[email protected] well, thanks for talking about that, at least now i have more reasons to stop using arch that aren't just the community
@usernameswift it's weird how everyone that uses Linux was born on 1 January 2000
@usernameswift What did systemd do this time?
@usernameswift
mind you this is only systemd
you can easily swap to something like openrc as an init system
@usernameswift I will spite-fork the kernel and build my own bespoke copy if I have to.
@usernameswift
Well my date of birth *is* Jan 1 2000, and I don't care who knows it.
@usernameswift hard coded to 1998... now I feel old.
@usernameswift
I do like the malicious compliance of having the field but hardcoding it.
