Also didn't ships used to use red lights inside the bridge at night, so that lookouts could keep their night vision.

I keep a red-light torch in my winter coat pocket for when out and about (rural area with almost no street lighting). Learned about it being better for preserving night vision way back when, when doing astronomy- in those days you put a red filter over an ordinary torch.
