There's no fucking mystery here (the Verge doesn't imply one, the article is well written, Im just saying aloud) - there is zero fiscal incentive for automakers to PUSH low end models.
Auto makers make $500 (Huyundai, VW) - 2k (BYD, GM) profit margin on EVs. This goes up with vehicle size/trim. Since there is no concerted effort by any level of government to incentivize small vehicles anymore (replace entirely by EVN subs), this reduces to `Get the consumer to spend more`.
