One more from the misunderstood sci-fi list: Robert A. Heinlein: Starship Troopers

On a deeper level ive always disliked that most popular space stuff is military. Even trek thats supposed to be about exploration military based. Mot sure why...but it does.

I always found it funny, how federation ships are overpowered for not being "military vessels".
No, no you misunderstand. This is an exploration and science vessel. We designed it with minimal weaponry. The fact that it's stronger than your dedicated warship is merely coincidental.

Yup. Im slowly hatching lil story and I'm avoiding that aspect. We'll see how it goes.
It's quite the flex, though, isn't it? “We're the Federation and we're so awesome that even our cushy flying hotels can kick your ass.”

I was thinking about this, not only for sci-fi, but also for other genres: I think this boils down to violence being the lowest level conflict resolution you can always fall back to.(That doesn't mean that it's wise to do so.)
In a story you usually want to escalate until the stakes are at their highest. If there are opposing factions, it is very hard to avoid at least one side picking violence, and it's usually hard to write a believable non-violent reaction to that.
