I was today years old when I first noticed that escalators can produce this choppy light-shadow effect.
For Berliners who want to see this effect in person: U Hallesches Tor, around noon. The escalator from the U6 platform onto Mehringplatz points almost directly north, so you have the sun in your back.

@ole I always find it weird to see outdoor escalators!

I lived in Montreal all my life, and here escalators are only found inside, behind closed doors.

I presume this is because of the vast amount of snow we get each year.

@vl_tone Yeah, I can’t think of many Berlin escalators either that don’t at least have a roof, even if they are (partly) outdoors. This one is a metro exit directly from the underground platform, and the station has no entrance building.
