why why why the does Thunderbird let you sort by email subject, I have never wanted to do this and I always do it if I "miss" trying to open the newest email, and when you have a 100k+ inbox this little maneuver's is gonna cost you 51 years of CPU time
@benjojo you and me both, i wish i could lock the filter columns since I'm almost never touching them
@benjojo
I used sorting by subject a few times when trying to clean up my mailbox - makes it easier to bulk-delete spam, automated alerts, etc
@benjojo
but yeah it only works up to a certain mailbox size
@benjojo I sort my emails newest-on-bottom and so I've never accidentally clicked the list header, maybe that's an option for you?
@benjojo ah, the joys of MorkDB, CPU killer extraordinaire
@benjojo Don't have so many emails in your inbox? 😝
@jamesog the 'all mail' folder is like 400k+ :p
@benjojo Oh I basically never look in there, I'll search instead - unless it's _very_ recent
@jamesog I think i've become a very different kind of email user in the past couple of years, So I've started to understand all of the things that seemed overkill in things like Microsoft outlook. A nicer email client would be nice but I will take the best compromise, that being thunderbird for now...
@benjojo @jamesog After struggling with thunderbird for several years, i had to humbly return to Mutt as nothing else handles the IETF mailing-lists with any reasonable speed.
@benjojo I think there is an extension to "freeze" email sorting

@[email protected] there's a plugin to prevent misclicks, makes it so that you have to ctrl+click the pane to sort https://services.addons.thunderbird.net/En-uS/thunderbird/addon/no-message-pane-sort-by-mouse/

@ozone89 ah this is the one I was thinking about!

No Message Pane Sort

No Message Pane Sort prevents accidental resorting of the message pane by disabling mouse button clicks on the column headers, thus, locking the sorting order of your emails. It is still possible to sort messages by ctrl-clicking the header.

@ozone89 yooo this is useful thanks! I'll give it a go
As someone who also never deletes or sorts any email and used to occasionally do the exact same thing in my previous job I understand this pain 😂

@benjojo there’s exactly one time I use “sort by subject”: it makes marking and dealing with spam runs with the same subject, received overnight over many hours with other email interspersed, much easier.

But I’d agree it should be much harder to *accidentally* change the sort order to anything other than chronological.
