Today I learned that Popeye was originally in the Coast Guard (black uniform shirt) until the outbreak of WWII when he joined the Navy in 1941 and switched to the all white uniform

What I'm reading says that he was in the US Merchant Marine in 1929, and that looks like it might the summer dress uniform. Joined Coast Guard 1937 (after a failed attempt to join the Army in 1936), Navy 1941.
