The Secretary of State who worked for Pres. Monroe was John Quincy Adams. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams said: "America goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy.”

I found this timely quote, which applies to the #IranWar, in a biography of Adams by James Traub that I am reading this week.
