A hobby project is unfolding (sort of)
@nina_kali_nina a cip kernel? 👀
@0x47df 'coz SLTS :3 tis is a pre-Pentium-III machine. Though arguably I should upgrade the OS, it's old.
@nina_kali_nina Ah! I wondered, I have some modern embedded stuff with CIP kernel and I hadn’t encountered it before, so I was kinda spooked seeing it in older hardware. But it makes sense!
@nina_kali_nina @0x47df
If you're willing to settle for building embedded images instead of full distributions, buildroot works really well for older hardware. I'm running 6.16.7 on a 486 w/64MB of RAM (as a BGP/Babel router using bird 2). buildroot also actually includes cip kernels as an option if you wanted to stick with that.

I haven't used Yocto at all (way too much for what I actually need), but my understanding is it's more along the lines of a build-your-own-distro if you want to put the effort to handle many older machines.

@nina_kali_nina We used to call that kind of laptop a “paving stone”

(Heavy)

@nina_kali_nina I love that Compaq keyboard! Laptop keyboards used to be so much better, with real three dimensional keys. I would pay real money for a new laptop with an old keyboard…
@nina_kali_nina (and the armada wasn’t even that good…)
@nina_kali_nina cip kernel, I didn't know it, you learn something new every day, and it seems not exactly the same as a LTS of a general distro
