All fun and games until you remember the Italian slur for black folks translates to “eggplant”
I’ve never heard “melanzana” being used as a slur for black people, are you confusing it with “fennel” being a slur for gay men or is that a regional thing?
Urban Dictionary: Mulignan

It's an ethnic slur for a black person, seemingly common for Italian-Americans. As User says, it comes from the Southern Italian mulignana, meaning eggplant, though most sources listed it as Sicilian.

I wouldn’t actually have bet on it being a regional thing, holy shit I’m clairvoyant

… that is if “Italian-American” counts as a regional thing, but I’ll allow it. Just this once.

I didn’t know that, but still racist is what struck me quickly
As an italian I’ve never heard that. People just say the N word (which is literally the word “black” in spanish).
I’m coming from a US centric place, but I’m pretty sure the N word is generally used to mean a very specific word which is notably not the Spanish word for black. Do people call the Spanish word the N word too in other countries?
You say zucchini to eggplant, isn’t zucchini another vegetable (green).

I have heard it used as a racial slurs once I the film True Romance (1993). It has a scene where Dennis Hopper’s character is explaining to Christopher Walken’s character (a Sicilian) how he’s “part eggplant” due to the fact that the Moors conquered Sicily in the past.

I’d link to the scene on YouTube but I don’t want to as it’s very racist.

Such a great scene tho, dialog written by Tarantino. “Could I have one of those Chesterfield’s now?”
