Endgame capitalism is squeezing harder since the 2008 crash and then Covid. They predicted polarising of politics and ideologies. We’re seeing tribalism as a reaction to fewer resources and harsher conditions, all of which are down to greed and oligarchy. They’ve succeeded in getting us to fight amongst ourselves instead of them.

We’re seeing tribalism

Not exactly “tribalism,” but “individualism,” at least in the States.

Classic tribalism has many fine features, and is in fact how we got here as a species, across millions of years. FUN FACT: did you know that the human species ("Homo” and relatives) goes back about 2.4million years, and through ~99.9% of that time, we successfully existed in a tribal / clan state?

IMO individualism also had great features, but when you mix in the concept of money…… oh dear.

No, this is very traditional tribalism where people of different skin colours and religions are vilified and blamed for anything and everything as convenient to the narrative. The same tribalism that’s been using ethnic cleansing as a solution since we were primates. The same tribalism that invents enemies to silence disagreement and disenfranchise dissenters. The dissenters would be the individualists in this case, and would likely be thrown over the walls.

None of those things relate to the core definitions of tribalism AFAIK, and if they did, then you might as well just say that modern humans at heart are far more toxic and destructive than just about any other species ever known.

Humans have been tribal - social creatures for millions of years (but probably much longer) and have barely left a footprint across that time. It’s our natural state, same with chimps and various other creatures. Sure it’s ugly at times, but it’s not insanely destructive.

What you’re really talking about are various consequences of the development of sapiens, more specifically high-populace, higher-tech, late-stage organisations of such. There may not be one particular word to sum the whole thing up, but it certainly isn’t “tribalism.” That said, it might be described as ‘the very worst aspects of tribalism and narcissism on super-steroids, acting on the national and international level.’
