noob questions seeking non-noob answers - Lemmy.World

I’ve been interested in self hosting a small variety of services yet I’m so confused on where to start. What would you guys recommend for a server machine? My main uses (and some of the services I think are appropriate for the use case) are: - 1tb photo, video storage, push/pull (immich) - 512gb total shared between downloaded music storage (navidrome) and pdf/ebook storage (calibre)—all pull only - 1tb movies/tv storage on a media server (jellyfin) - 512gb storage for random junk or whatever, plus a file transfer push/pull (syncthing…? or nextcloud?) - potential basic bio website hosting (near future) - potential email hosting (distant future) anyways with that all said i have a few questions: - what server should i buy if i want to expand storage in the future? should i just build a pc with like 3x1tb storage, or 6x1tb storage w/ redundancy? totally confused about the concept of redundancy lol - any thoughts on the services im suggesting? especially for file transfer

for music both jellyfin and navidrome are subsonic API compatible for use with mobile and desktop apps (like symfonium and feishin). Some people choose to just use jellyfin instead of a dedicated music service. Personally i run still run navidrome for music. I give some thoughts on that here
Fun/interesting things to self host? - programming.dev

What things do you self host (or know about) that are fun/interesting/useful to you? I’m thinking of setting up a home server and am looking for things that would be useful or fun for me to run on it. I want to host things that are useful/fun, but not a project itself (I’ve got enough projects), if that makes sense. Most of the lists I see online are mostly lists of technical projects like docker, kubernetes, grafana, nginx, etc. I see these as infrastructure rather than the interesting project itself. ETA: the infra is important, but not “interesting” in this context as I deal with infra at my day job. Examples of the type of service I’m looking at: a media server, photos app (to replace Google Photos), game servers, recipe management, home automation… What other things do you know about that are fun/interesting/useful? Edit: thank you everyone for your awesome responses!

awesome thanks for that! im guessing you use symfonium and feishin for your client apps too?
Yup! Mostly symfonium since i mostly use my phone for music. Started using feishin recently for desktop use and have been really impressed with it. I csv recommend both! And they’ll both work with jellyfin or navidrome depending on which you decide to use for music
