In Dutch we call the most important question on a subject “de hamvraag” (literally the ham question). Pop etymology says in local quizzes the grand prize for getting the hardest question right was a ham, hence “de hamvraag”.

It’s indeed from a quiz: a radio quiz from the 1950s where contestants climbed a mast with every correct answer. At the top of the mast hung a ham. Mastclimbing to win a ham was done as early as the 16th century!
