“You don’t look sick.”

Most chronic illness is invisible. Hearing this often feels less like reassurance and more like our reality is being quietly dismissed.

“Have you tried yoga?”

Or turmeric. Or drinking celery juice. When you live with serious illness, you’ve usually tried far more things than people imagine.

“At least it’s not worse.”

This one is usually meant kindly.

But pain, exhaustion, and uncertainty don’t really work on a comparison scale.

“Everything happens for a reason.”

Sometimes illness just happens. People living with it usually aren’t looking for cosmic explanations. They’re just trying to get through the day.

“Stay positive.”

Most people with chronic illness are positive. We have to be. But we also need room to be tired, frustrated, or scared sometimes.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

Sometimes it just makes you tired.

Living with chronic illness teaches you that compassion matters far more than perfect words.

Often the most helpful thing someone can say is simply:

“I’m here if you need me.”
