TIL that the California PUC really dialed back the utility of Net Metering in 2023 when they approved NEM 3.0

I’ve heard that Oregon is considering doing something similar and I’m going to have to become more aware and help organize push-back because this seems like a load of baloney.

Californians should get their legislators to push back on this industry boondoggle.

@GeekAndDad I'm not so sympathetic. NEM 2 was an unsustainably good deal. It incentivized the wrong things. Under NEM 2 there was no reason to install battery storage, adjust load times, or otherwise help solve the duck curve problem.

The optimal strategy was to install panels only, feed power back to the grid when it was least desirable, drive your own net cost to $0, and make everyone else pay for the storage and option value that you get from the grid.
