Via Rail 'needs to improve its service' despite solid management: auditor general

Via Rail needs to improve its service — punctuality, in particular — according to Canada’s auditor general, who nonetheless gave solid marks to the Crown corporation’s management practices. @EdwinG I so want to take the train but service is terrible. My bf regularly takes the train and it's always late... when they don't just stay stuck in the middle of a field.
@chantaryu2 They need to go onto their own network, instead of relying on legacy freight owners.

@EdwinG I’m a bit lost here. “Management totally awesome no problems, but also their trains are late 70% of the time.”

So it’s the fault of who then?

@jamie @EdwinG the freight rail companies that own the tracks and give their own traffic absolute priority
@NeueWelle @EdwinG I could find that believable. Freight traffic is a problem that isn’t easy to get around.
@jamie @EdwinG both literally and figuratively!

@NeueWelle @jamie Unfortunately, it’s CN’s fault.

VIA doesn’t own most of their network 😥

@EdwinG Canadas rail legalisation is garbage, freight rail takes priority over all else, and CN/CP own all the track.

You can blame them for almost all delays.

I suppose the government is trying to get around this by building ALTO...buuuut that's not going to help VIA at all.
