So, Covid-cautious peeps: how do you handle it when the people in your orbit want sympathy for getting sick •again•.

I just had this go-round again today with one of my coworkers, & I'm afraid I didn't handle it very well. (Granted, there were other factors in play that impaired my restraint. But even so....)

#CovidIsNotOver #MaskUp

@cavyherd I tell them they should wear a mask and isolate, because 99% of time they don't...

@UndeadMinotaur

Yeah, I tried to have that conversation and...it didn't go well.

@cavyherd They never go well.... 😅

@UndeadMinotaur

Yeah.

I know better. I was tired & feeling unbearably sad (bc The World) (but also really f'n angry) so my guard was down.

@cavyherd No really, I am happy for anyone that still shows they care and tell people to give af, so thank you ❤️

@UndeadMinotaur

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yeah. That was one of the points I was trying to make, but of course it sailed right over coworker's head without raising a breeze in their hair.

Welp. Now I can confidently conclude that they Just Don't Get It. Which is useful information.

@cavyherd I usually just say “I hope you feel better soon,” and leave it at that. It’s true, though also I wish they’d get a clue.

@gannet

That is absolutely 💯/💯 what I should have (& would have usually) done. However, they'd already sandbagged me with a comment about the Current State Of World Affairs that unhorsed me, so my guard was down, & for some gods-forsaken reason, I decided to Tell The Truth for once.

Please, Cavy, for the love of all that's holy, don't do that again....

@[email protected] Maybe I'm rude but I ignore it if I can and if I can't I say "I don't get how you tolerate being sick so often."

@abucci

Oh, that's •very• good! Thank you!

(& one that I can support with my whole chest (heh) because the last time* I got a respiratory virus was sometime in 2018 or 2019....)

* Knock on wood

@[email protected] Similar for me. I know people who are down with some preventable illness at least part of a week, if not parts of several weeks every single month during the winter. This is not something that happened this much prior to the COVID pandemic, and I'm honestly at a loss to explain why people tolerate it.

@abucci

It baffles me, too. Aside from the social isolation involved in avoiding COVID, masking is certainly a PITA, but •damn• it seems preferable to the alternative.

Given the way the US has been going in the last ten years, the only sense I can make out of it (which makes too damn much sense, honestly, & makes me feel like a conspiracy nut) is that it has all been a gigantic, systemic psyop. Likely complements of Vlad the Greedy.
