me as a kid, reading the fable about the emperor who has no clothes: what a dumb story

me today, living through the current political situation: ok i get it now

@tiffanycli

It's still dumb.

The reality, I mean.

@tiffanycli me as a kid, with that and the ‘no-kings’ mindset of misc revolutions: uh, we keep consolidating power back toward royal-like leaders. WTF happens if we elect dumbasses or criminals?

Me today: yikes, both?!

@tiffanycli

Is this a test for autism? Or are all kids puzzled by why anyone would pretend and give into peer pressure?

@NilaJones @tiffanycli This! Or put another way, how early in life do adults prevail in enculturating children to disregard evidence in favor of a consensus reality? Some of us NDs just don’t “grow out of” that self-orientation and imo that’s strong evidence having a random blend of us in a population is adaptive on a population level when survival is at stake. “This water tastes fine” only has to be wrong once.

@cwicseolfor @tiffanycli

That's a very interesting idea, about evidence and consensus reality

@tiffanycli And way more subversive than I realized as a kid
@tiffanycli It's been a real history lesson
@tiffanycli the children's story that keeps coming up for me is the old woman who swallowed the fly. I see it everywhere, people, and societies do one stupid thing, and instead of acknowledging the mistake, and accepting the consequences, they keep doing increasingly more stupid things. We're surrounded by all the things they keep swallowing. One day they'll swallow the horse and we'll all be dead of course.

@tiffanycli Now I can't get that Rankin Bass song out of my head.
