John Altringham

Rievaulx Abbey, N. Yorkshire. Another Cistercian monastery founded in the early 12C and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. A one hour drive from home, it is at the centre of one of my long term ecology research sites.
Never thought I'd be engraving it. Engraving details in ALT text. What to do with window and door spaces? Several options, all with opportunities and risks...

@JohnAltringham Plain black and plain white both seem rather stark. Will the details be any more tricky than what you've already done? (which is beautiful work, you're very good at this!)

@janeishly Thanks! You are probably right but detail in the windows might compete with the architecture and just make it fussy. I will experiment...

@JohnAltringham Yeah, it's a tricky one! I want to say "can you make them kind of greyish?" but I feel like that's not really an answer!

@janeishly It sort of is an answer - thinner, slighter marks - hard but possible, or a second block for these areas only and use lighter ink - possible but not something I've tried yet.

To see a bit of the sky and of trees both in the windows and above the walls in a way that suggests continuity between these spaces may work. Door seems to be a much harder nut. Anyway, this is already beautiful now with the diversity of stone patterns and the grass.
