We often think of intelligence as belonging to individuals or species. But Earth’s biosphere regulates itself through complex feedback loops that stabilize the conditions for life.

Could this resemble a kind of planetary intelligence that is distributed, adaptive, and self-maintaining? If so, how might we detect similar forms of intelligence elsewhere?
