Usual reactions:

1. Wow. this is beyond what I thought they can do. It's not there yet, but it seems like it'll be AlphaGo for all sports. (curve-orientated)

2. Wow. this is cool, but it's simply not good enough to play against professional athletes today. (utility-orientated).

Usually, these two groups talk past each other. Instead, the utility-orientated people think that curve-oriented people are all hype and hucksters, and the curve-oriented people think the utility-oriented people are luddites and short-sighted.
I wish they would recognize these are two different kinds of statements that emphasize two different aspects of the same thing. They don't contradict each other.
