We welcome the proposal to extend the AI Act to prohibit AI systems that enable the generation of non-consensual sexual and intimate content or child sexual abuse material. Such technologies cause real harm, and a clear ban is an important step to protect those affected.
However, for this protection to be effective, proper oversight is essential. In Austria, a competent authority responsible for implementing the AI Act has still not been designated. 1/2 🧵
At the same time, the European Commission has proposed postponing the application of rules for high-risk AI by up to 16 months.
Especially when technologies can have severe impacts on fundamental rights, one principle should apply: protection must not wait.
Austria needs a clear authority for AI oversight now and Europe should not further delay key safeguards. 2/2
