Is One Battle After Another that good? I haven’t heard much buzz around it aside from the oscars.
Its Hipster Taken. Instead of a very particular set of skills acquired over a long career the lead character is a looser stoner who screams at everyone.

So? That’s kind of the whole point of the movie. He used to be the French 75’s explosives guy but he has long decided that his revolutionary days are over. Now, almost 20 years later, his past comes back to haunt him and his completely innocent daughter.

Not every movie needs a power fantasy action hero as its protagonist.

And you’re completely missing the point of my post. The movie sucked ass
And you failed to explain why the movie sucked. Having flawed characters doesn’t make a movie bad.
Found this old post by the same user. For some reason they’re irrationally angry at that movie and label so many things that in my opinion worked really well as annoying.
One Battle After Another - Lemmy.zip

This movie… If you want to be annoyed for three hours this movie is for you!! This movie does an excellent job of making every part of it annoying. - Want annoying action scenes… (see bloated pregnant women firing machine guns) this movie has them - Want annoying character names (see Jungle Pussy and Lockjaw) this movie has them. - Want annoying characters (see all of them) this movie has them - Want blaring scene inappropriate music, this movie has that! - Want annoying dialogue, this movie has that! - Want clumsy, vague and annoying story points, this movie has that. - Want to see annoying sex scenes, this movie has several of those! - Want to be annoyed that you can’t get those three hours back, this movie is for you! I understand that this is considered the best movie of 2025… holy hell if that is true 2025 has to be worst year for movies in history.

The movie didn’t “suck ass”. You didn’t like it and that’s fine. You’re allowed to like or dislike whatever you want. But that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad movie. And not caring what the movie was going for is a fantastic first step for totally missing its point and not understanding why others like it.
Oh! You don’t judge movies by what they are, but instead by what you want them to be. Any movie you personally don’t like is bad. As though you’re supposed to be the target audience for every movie. I love that for you. Super great perspective. No notes.
The movie sucks
I can see your educated, reasoned, wise, and eloquently articulated analyses.
It’s a truly compelling argument, unassailable in it’s logic and historical citations.
I applaud you. You have a truly dizzying intellect.

I am criticizing a movie and you are being an asshole.

Fuck you, eat shit and die.

You’re not, actually.
Criticism requires more effort, understanding, and explanation.

What you’re doing is complaining, or whingeing. “No like movie. Movie bad.”

To offset the other comment, I would say it’s a good movie but it’s probably not for everyone. While it has quite a few action scenes, I would say those are not the main focus of the story. It’s a movie about a guy who stood up for his ideals in a violent way when he was younger and paid the price. Now, 15-20 years later, he does his best leave it all behind. He lives a very private life, shuts out his trauma with drugs and can barely remember how to contact his old friends. The problem is, someone from his past still has a score to settle and his innocent teenage daughter gets caught in the crossfire so he’s forced to deal with the consequences of his decades-old actions again.

Also, expect a bunch of pretty open criticism of the way things work in the USA right now. Right at the beginning, we see an attempt at freeing illegal immigrants from a detention camp and later there’s a lot more.

It is good, if a little forceful with its message. Acting is fantastic, especially Leo and Benicio working off of each other.
It really is.
It’s entertaining, funny, heart-renching, poignant, surprising, satisfying.
It’s a fantastic wild ride.
I feel it’s overrated. Maybe because I’m not American, but I don’t really find the movie that memorable. It’s relevant for sure but i doubt that makes a movie the best. The whole flashback at the start with Teyana felt perverted and silly while dragged out so long with no meaning to the remaining plot. Bugonia, Marty Supreme were my choice. Apparently some of the voters didn’t even watch Marty.
It was excellent, in my opinion. Great acting and never really knew what would happen next!
Honestly, this video was the best summarization of my impression with the film, including what bothered me about it: youtube.com/watch?v=Tzw9t22ngwI (has spoilers, in case you wanted to watch the film before taking in reviews of it).
