@cynicalsecurity I'm too lazy to look into details, but I wonder if they disabled caching.
I remember a while ago, it was known in enterprise storage circles that at least one vendor's drive firmware did that intentionally. The day I found an empty caddy at a spare desk, i chuckled because that meant someone had walked off with a drive and was sorely disappointed when they put it in their machine at home.
