In all fairness, he comes from a privileged family.
It's a lot easier to turn a $1 million into a $1 billion, than to turn $10 into $1000, or $1000 into $1 million, and so on.
It's really, really expensive to be poor. A poor man has 2 choices, $100 for a pair of shoes that lasts 5 years, or $30 for a pair that lasts 1 year. When you're at the bottom, surviving keeps pushing you down.
