This Brendel/Zubin Mehta Emperor concerto recording is played as if they are running for their lives and if they stop to breathe the tympani will GET them.
@ceejbot I don’t know the recording, but that sounds…not ideal. (The first performance of the Emperor I saw was Brendel/Rattle, and I remember it being quite stately & unhurried?)
@grahamsleight I’m surprised by this! Far too fast for fun. (I say, realizing we're not talking about all that much faster but STILL.)
@ceejbot I guess it’s like the finale of Beethoven’s 7th, and the question: “How can I make this thrillingly fast and yet make sure everything is heard?” To which the answer is, “Hire Carlos Kleiber.”
