The case was dismissed on Christmas Eve, but the damage had already been done; she had no money, no coat, and no way home, and subsequently lost her house, her car, and her dog.
The AI fucking up is noteworthy, but real story is right here.
That would fix it quickly. Wrongful arrest takes funding directly from the agency that did it. 6months in prison, all funds for 6months for that agency. Either everyone will quit or they would shut down completely. Asking the police officers to work for no pay for 6 months would eventually pit them against others making wrongful arrests and make those who don’t care about doing whats right quit because they don’t care about anything but the paycheck. The only people you might have left are those who actually wanted to help the people.
Or they’d just become more corrupt and kill more people to make sure they had no say… Hard to say

More likely would eventually cause them all to quit and look for new jobs. I’m no cop sympathizer, but they don’t get paid enough to survive 2 months without pay, let alone 6. The people who actually wanted to help others would quit too.
I thought filing egregiously inaccurate documents with the court was risking contempt of court (in the best of cases).
Ignoring the court itself, I’d think for a prosecutor or cop this would lead to pretty bad performance reviews.
But if the system has no standards…
What I find interesting is that the authoritarian right complains about the authoritarian left using “big government” to bully their favorite businesses and organizations, while the authoritarian left complains about the authoritarian right using the police to do the same.
It’s like neither side realize that the police are PART OF THAT GOVERNMENT!
Except that what your comment misses is that the right thinks that the left wants to use the government to control their lives and the left in places like the US and Canada is not authoritarian just because they want the most basic government regulations on the practices that we can all see are screwing us over. The problem with your comment is that it acts as if both are operating within the same reality but we can see very fucking clearly that that simply isn’t true.
Conservative ideology is historically always authoritarian, it has to be. It is an ideology which exists to protect the system of a few people on top who own everything else, with a good bit of hating anyone who isn’t a straight, cis man because that helps get the voting base riled up.
