New York, March 15, 2026 - At the initiative of organizations of the solidarity movement with Cuba, the 9th International Conference on Normalization Cuba-United States was held in New York, an exchange space that brought together academics, activists, social leaders and friends of the Island committed to the promotion of respectful relations between both countries. The Conference highlighted the leading role and historic commitment of the international solidarity movement, whose organizations played a decisive part in convening, organizing, and conducting the various sessions and activities. During the discussions, participants reiterated their support for the Cuban people and their commitment to defending Cuba’s sovereignty against the economic pressure policies directed against the island. In the inaugural plenary session, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, reiterated Cuba’s historic willingness to hold a serious and respectful dialogue with the United States, based on sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs and respect for the political system chosen by each State. The Cuban diplomat also denounced the impact of the oil embargo imposed against the island, whose consequences aggravate economic difficulties and affect the functioning of sectors essential to the life of the population. Within the framework of the Conference, meetings were also held between representatives of solidarity organizations and members of the Cuban delegation, which allowed for a first-hand exchange on the current situation in the country and the consequences of the policy of economic strangulation applied by the United States government. During the activities, participants highlighted Cuba’s example and its role as a benchmark for dignity, social justice, and the defense of the freedom of peoples, emphasizing that these values continue to inspire the active support of broad sectors of international civil society. The solidarity organizations reaffirmed their commitment to continue promoting information, mobilization, and support actions in defense of Cuba, while the Cuban delegation deeply appreciated this support and reiterated that Cuba will continue to bet on dialogue and cooperation, as long as these are developed on the basis of respect, sovereign equality, and without interference in internal affairs.
