I don't think I've asked on here recently, so let's give it a go:
Who are the Spiritual Successors to New Model Army?

#music #newModelArmy

@ArmouredWizard okay, I gotta give it to you, maybe heard OF these guys in passing, didn't know their sound - had to look it up. It has almost a punk kinda feel, right on the edge, like some New Age/Cars from the 70s, the punk of the 80s? First thing that came to mind is oi. Does everything remind me of oi? Maybe. 😂 but my favorite oi album recently is this. Similar vibes? From last year.

And then I thought of the Briefs. This is my favorite of theirs. From 2019. My #2 punk album of all time.

Both fairly stripped down, super simple, hooky punk type stuff that I love. But not crap radio pop punk like Blink.

@jake4480 They definitely have some punk vibes, but also some melody (fun fact: A fitting anagram of New Model Army is "Raw Melody Men"!)
Favourite not-so-fast-and-raw:
Vagabonds, Green and Grey, Love songs

@ArmouredWizard @jake4480 I caught them live in Birmingham around 92/93

Ed the violinist came out as the opener for his solo work. I happened to catch him busking in Oxford a few months before and did not realize 🤦‍♂️

@jake4480 @ArmouredWizard It does depend on which albums you're listening to - they've put out a lot of material over the years, and there have been some changes in style over the years.

@0x575446 Worth a look! Wikipedia says they've toured with NMA, so that's a plus! :)

@0x575446 @ArmouredWizard I was going to recommend Ferocious Dog myself.

They're more obviously 'folk punk' in their influences, rather than NMA's more post-punk start.

@ArmouredWizard my spouse and I agree on The Scratch. This album in particular, https://album.link/d/476076075. But we're still digging into New Modal Army so milage may vary.

@ArmouredWizard They don't need spiritual successors - they're still going. (Will be seeing them three times this year.)

Do you mean successors in terms of sociopolitical content, or in terms of musical style?
