A prickly pear cactus (Opuntia engelmannii 'O') in the snow. It's not native here, but to the southwest, northern Mexico and the U.S. east to Dallas. This selection is from the eastern end of the range where it is wet in the winter. I planted this in the fall and am crossing my fingers -- it got quite wet this winter.

@eric Be careful, they can be invasive. I remember clearing them from a hillside in Topanga.

It is surrounded by turf and meadow in a very urban neighborhood. If it is aggressive, it can't get far. I suspect our summer will keep it in check, we are both drier and much cooler than than East Texas.

... but the range maps show Opuntia engelmannii as native to South California -- maybe Eastern L.A. though.
