Firefly came out on DVD at a very particular time in my life and my wife and I were huge fans. We even considered naming a daughter (if we ever had one) Inara.

But more than 20 years have passed and looking back at it leaves me uncomfortable.

Broken Chinese spoken mostly by white actors, but no time for Asian actors. This weird Confederate apologia. Hell, naming a faction the "Browncoats" when the Brownshirts were Hitler's paramilitary. The lead repeatedly negging his love interest and calling her a WHORE...

Ron Glass is dead so if they bring back Shepherd Book they'll have to recast it, but they made damn sure to bring back Adam Baldwin -- who I'll remind everyone was a damned GamerGater.

This whole thing is making me 😬.

There's no win here. What was accepted 20 years ago isn't (or shouldn't be) acceptable today. If they change Firefly, people will complain it doesn't match up to the original. If they don't change Firefly, people will complain it doesn't meet the current political climate.

I missed this detail before. So it's "in production" at Nathan's own production studio and he's pitching it. Given what happened with the Buffy reboot, it might be a tough sale anyway.

@jenny753

Lots of actors pitch lots of stuff for the legacy characters they once played.

My take is that with the current shift in ownership of the major media, he may feel that decision makers in studios will be willing to overlook some of the more toxic positions he’s taken since he’s been starring in *The Rookie*.

For my part, I was surprised that *Resident Alien* was willing to bring him in for cameos, but I am not part of the *Firefly* fandom.

In any event, I’m really not sure what market these weird western in space kind of shows have outside the US at this point. Paramount+’s market would be a more likely fit for the show, especially given his current show is on CBS, but the IP belongs to Disney.

@jenny753 You are not wrong.

... but this is also a new start and a chance for them to do a lot of those things correctly this time.

(As someone has ho did name their kid Inara. I'm hopeful.)

@LexPendragon @jenny753 Speaking as a Trekkie who's had to stare down the gullet of "people are gonna bitch if they change it, people are gonna bitch if they don't update it to modern sensibilities", I quite frankly would prefer they update it and leave the whiners in the rear view.

I honestly ditched the Firefly fandom years ago because as I got older and wiser, I grew more and more uncomfortable with what I was looking at. There were absolutely some wonderful parts, and many members of the team both in front and behind the camera are wonderful. I'd love to see them brought back to an updated and more inclusive look at the verse, but there are absolutely people who I would not want involved in the new project (and frankly Joss Whedon is one of them) and would be enough to keep me from giving it a chance.

@deathkitten @LexPendragon Adam Baldwin credited himself for naming GamerGate and was an avid spokesman for it.

His involvement alone is enough for me to not give it a chance.

@jenny753 I'd heard some things about him, but I hadn't learned about the GamerGate involvement until this thread. Considering how much other stuff they'd have to fix to make an updated series watchable, dismissing him from the cast seems like an easy addition to that list if they'll get me back.
@LexPendragon

@jenny753 Yeah, there's absolutely no way this turns out well with the people involved right now. Also I've noticed that Firefly fandom has died down drastically over time compared some other niche SF series of the era: I see even more Farscape posting these days.

Mind you, I'm a huge Farscape fan so...

@jenny753 Not that Farscape doesn't have its own issues, but they're less intrinsic to the setting/cast of the work.
@jenny753 yeahhh I've long been pretty sure that more firefly would be a net negative. like. you think you want it because you loved it in 2003 but it ain't 2003 and we're none of us in our twenties anymore.
