I'm really starting to dig this IC-7100. Just worked J51A on 14.225 MHz on the 5th call, barefoot. I think my doublet has substantial gain on 20m in their direction. Having the 7300 and the 9700 really helped reduce the learning curve.

I also really like the desktop remote head concept. My eyes are starting to wander in the direction of the IC-7760. 😄

@kr1st

I have always been attracted to remote head radios over the "big solid box" radios. I have never had the "typical operating desk" with all the deep shelves and such, I will never have it, and neither do I want it.

@kr1st

A tip: you might consider putting your power supply on the floor or way up high. My elmer took great pains to get his noise floor as low as possible. He legitimately had an S0 noise floor, even with an ultra-sensitive Elecraft K3S. When you create an environment that quiet, you're able to find out things about RFI. He told me that putting the power supply on the desk raised his noise floor 1 to 1.5 S-units, and my own experimentation confirmed this. On the floor or a high shelf, no RFI.

@kilroy_was_here I kind of consider the 9700 and the 7300 I have "remote heads" because the actual power generation happens on a different desk with the amps. Maximum power generated on my operating desk is 40W on HF/50, and (much) lower above that.

My power supplies are also on the separate desk with the amps. I run an umbilical to the operating desk. I don't want to put a power supply on the floor because it could suck in a lot of dust, although you'll be hard pressed to find any here. 😀

@kilroy_was_here Btw, the IC-7100 setup in the picture is not on the actual operating desk but on the desk with the power supplies and amps just as a temporary test installation.
