Starfleet Academy out of context [No Spoilers]

Dude. How has Giamatti never been in trek yet? They could base an entire movie around what ever character he disappears into.

He’s the main villain of Starfleet Academy lol thus the out of context.

I was genuinely fucking worried about Starfleet Academy. All the posters made it look really teenager-y and a lot of the branding felt that way too. Then it opens with the Federation seperating a mother from her child in a dark as fuck trial. Me and a buddy I met here on Lemmy watched every episode of the season together on Plex and we were surprised everytime but no more than that. We both had the same kinda thoughts, although me more worried than him I think, but were shocked at how well it took it around.

Only real issue that we both had and completely agreed on (minor disagreements are always to be expected but especially with us… a venn diagram that barely overlaps. Love you bro <3) was they used some pop music during the first and final episode we could have done without. But otherwise?

Added brand new worlds and civilizations. Added new cultures. Expanded on Star Trek lore and what happened with Sisko. Gave a satisfying narrative conclusion to some of The Doctor’s story/suffering from some stuff in Voyager/Prodigy. Did the typical reflection of the world through Star Trek (seperating kids from families is just the start of it), screamed hope/optimism/empathy/love/compassion from every rooftop, eye candy to fuck with them seeming to have designed the outfits almost exclusively for showing off one of the guys enormous-ass muscles (and enormous ass-muscles). And most importantly?

Paul Giamatti as the campiest and Star Trek-iest villain since Q and Harry Mudd. Kind of a mix of both to an extent. Dude was acting the fucking paint off of the walls. It was absolutely fucking incredible. Also Holly Hunter as Captain was a fantastic choice. I stan Captain No Shoes.

People gonna love/hate it. But it’s doing shockingly well critically. Most of the complaints have been based around it being not like the older Treks but Trek doesn’t stay stagnant. It boldly goes. Explores strange new opportunities and expands on the world. No part of it stamps down on what came before, it just builds off of giants. If people don’t like it, meh. Don’t gotta watch it. But I’d give it at least a chance if I were you. After all, what Starfleet vessel goes to Red Alert immediately without doing some exploration first?

Ok that’s awesome. I don’t care what people say about it, we get see Giamatti in trek!? Fuck. Yeah!
Honestly that was my reaction too. Deeply worried about the show and hesitant but willing to watch it just for him. I fell in love with basically everything in the show. As much as I love Discovery… this I think is better. Still love the USS Discovery more than the USS Athena though.
