Why not just plant a new tree?
The article is frustratingly cryptic, reading it (because there are so many gaps) I was left with the impression that this was talking about plans for some kind of permanent monument at the site, but doing a bit of digging the best I can tell this is purely about deciding what to do with the timber, not what should replace it at the site.
My understanding is that the felling didn’t actually kill the tree. There were apparently spouts coming up from the stump.

Of the 6, I sort of liked “The Peoples Tree” best, but none of the candidates really struck me as really brilliant.
