Thanks @mwichary for writing this. I also was always confused by the “cute” messages. You are the app, I am a human, I use you, why are you talking back to me? Why do I have to spend my mental energy deciphering what you meant and what you want from me?

@nikitonsky @mwichary I sometimes like them, for adding a human touch from the designers. But they sometimes go too far, like in the example in the article.
@golemwire @nikitonsky I think to me the theme is sort of infantilization of professional/enterprise apps. You can also see that in Tahoe’s naïve “content above UI” policy that I think makes sense for consumption, but not creation.
@mwichary @golemwire for me it’s also confusing placement. Like if somebody writes “Have a nice day” on a door instead of “Push” or “Pull”. I don’t mind seeing “Have a nice day” message somewhere neutral, in a place not occupied by any other function, but not where I expect very specific help
