falsehoods youtubers believe about "AI"

hearing gullible 20-somethings say "this technology DOES have good use-cases, like in medicine for example…"

is going to turn me into the fucking Joker

@SnoopJ Does the protein folding one count as not a good use case?
@OliviaVespera @SnoopJ Protein folding does not require (and most programs do not use) LLM-related tech. That form of machine learning long predates "AI" and has far fewer problems.

@wcbdata @OliviaVespera @SnoopJ Yeah, it's important to note that "AI" now means something different than "AI" some years back. Various machine learning techniques have been used to great effect in various fields well before LLMs came along and took over the "AI" moniker.

When us critics say "this technology" we don't mean the entire field of study, the name of which isn't even clear to me anymore. We mean LLMs being substituted for all the rest of it.

@gwozniak @OliviaVespera @SnoopJ I think I agree, but it's important to note that the various machine learning tools were never called AI, and was never claimed as an intelligence by anyone who knew what they were talking about. It's a statistical model with specific applications. LLMs aren't "AI" either, but the marketing has taken over...

@wcbdata @gwozniak @OliviaVespera @SnoopJ

Your right about the marketing bs (including the unsaid parts).
But AI is, like any kind of intelligenc, not binary but has an unkown, but huge, number of factors.

Even the most stupid AI in a game, is still AI.
