What’s unbelievable is that the plot explanation required an entire 45 minutes

“Make sword also shout dragon kill eat sweet roll not die”

Last of the blades, forgive nazi dragon, kill Voldemort dragon in Valhalla

Was there more to the plot?

Take back what you said about Paarthurnax or I’ll start listing reasons why FFVIII was the worst PS era Final Fantasy
I mean, I forgave the nazi dragon. You know how valuable having a dragon on your side is?
1: the game is trivialized by 15 minutes of grinding magic reserves at the start
The game is trivialized by just kind of knowing what you’re doing. I did a run without grinding magic draws or card refine or grinding for items to refine or anything like that and I still breezed through it. It’s probably the easiest Final Fantasy game I’ve played.
2: Quistis is best girl and yet we are forced into the Rinoa romance

Quistis is phenomenal. But she’s a terrible match for Squall. She likes him because he’s not childish. But he’s still not mature. And she’s more of an intellectual who needs mature conversations, which Squall is not equipped for. There’s a reason why she only really gets close to Cid.

Also, the whole teacher/motherly figure aspect is very problematic. So while she’s best girl, Rinoa is best girl for Squall. Same how Aerith was best girl, but Tifa was best girl for Cloud. Or Quina was best girl, but Garnet was best girl for Zidane.

3: Irvine not saying anything about all his childhood friends not recognizing him

Bro had a whole glow up and knows it, the first thing any real person would have said was “Hey dudes it’s me! I’m a hot cowboy now!”

It’s been beaten to death before but it’s just so fundamentally stupid it must be said

Yeah, I think the explanation is that none of them seemed to care that they were all childhood friends, so he didn’t bring it up either. He’s surprisingly impressionable, so it makes sense.

Also, it makes way more sense than Tifa just letting Cloud make up lies about her hometown slaughter.

4: The normalizing of child soldier mercenaries

Cid is low key a manipulative, morally gray character. Every one of the children were manipulated into the party by him, one unsuccessfully. I actually really, REALLY liked his character when I realized this. The only issue I have is that I wish it was more explicit.

If they ever do a remake, I would love for that to be expanded on or given extra emphasis. Cid is basically Professor X from X-Men.

However, it does add context that he was preparing for the literal end of the world. It’s never confirmed if Galbadia was in on the plan or if they just went along with it. But either way, Cid must have been surprised that everyone was kinda okay with teen mercenaries, trained through childhood.

5: Zell

Wore the face tattoo better than Mike Tyson.

Also, how dare you. Zell is a treasure.

Okay you’re right I retract it it’s not Zell’s fault he was designed in 90’s

5: You can get most of the ultimate weapons in disk one

If you’re going through that much trouble, you’re wanting to break the game. And I encourage that.
6: The aliens ruin an emotional build up and interesting lore moment for zero payoff

Woah, woah, woah.

I assume you’re talking about Lunar Cry ruining the space scenes? I haven’t heard that before. Kinda wild. But I respect your opinion.

7: Squall doesn’t get to summon the objectively coolest GF Griever, and a lazy translation doesn’t make it clear in English that Ultimecia drew it from his mind directly.

Wait, is that what happened? I assumed it was a legendary GF, maybe long-dead, that Ultimecia has access to.

100% legitimate complaint though.

Yeah it’s apparently clearer in Japanese that Griever is Squall’s concept of the ultimate GF, which adds both a literal Final Fantasy and an element of Squall fighting and defeating his own idea of ultimate power.

7.5 Lazy translations didn’t want to deal with any of the more complicated ideas, so fan theories came up with weird shit like Rinoa being Ultimecia (but that is admittedly fun so I’m only counting it as half a reason)

Is that due to translations? Does the original Japanese expand on the sorceresses/Ultimecia?

I felt like the Rinoa theory was due to missed opportunity to have Ultimecia’s origin be explicitly connected to the past rather than just being evil. But the game teases a lot of lore, which can be frustrating but also makes the world feel rich.

I always hoped that a game like Forspoken (didn’t play it) would take you through Ultimecia getting hunted preemptively and turning her villain, like a bootstrap paradox.

I think it’s clearer that she’s trying to fight fate in a time paradox because SeeD’s persecution of sorceresses is her villainous origin but that might be something Dissidia revealed rather than a translation problem

8: No closure between Laguna and Squall

Oof, I kinda go back and forth on that. Closure for Laguna, definitely. He deserves it. But I can’t imagine any extra closure from Squall other than more resentment towards this “moron”.

Dude’s an emotionally closed off war orphan that got shunted into being an admittedly relatively well adjusted child soldier with amnesia, he’s 100% tsundere for closure and hearing about his past, come on now.

9: the Card Queen basically requires an online guide

Oh, I don’t even touch Card Queen. I love triple triad, but I’m not about all that back and forth. Hell, Shumi Village is barely even fractionally as bad, and I skip it on replays.
