The swearing, the Russian jokes, Scotty _talking_ to the computer, it's just endless fun in a Star Trek context.
And as a kid, I was convinced those whales were real. <3

Apparently there were random people walking around the guards blocking off the sidewalks, so some of the people in these scenes had no idea there was a Star Trek movie shoot going on.
