that hyphenation tho … In Indic manuscripts, there's no concept of word breaks, you just continue on the next line. Effectively the text is just one line that happens to turn a corner.
I have a vague memory that Latin is sometimes treated like that (possibly scribal era). The hyphenation is liberal, and the word spacing is tighter than modern expectations, but overall still closer to an ideal page than most modern typesetting. #imho
I suspect that the perfection of letterspacing, rhythm and form in the font itself enables tighter word spacing since it stands out more from the texture.
